Mumbai Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow Alert as Rainfall Continues

Mumbai rain: IMD upgrades warning to 'yellow'; orange alert issued for Palghar, Raigad | Mumbai news - Hindustan Times

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded its weather alert for Mumbai, issuing a yellow alert until 8 AM on Friday. The city is expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, ranging from 15.6 mm to 115.5 mm, due to strong westerly winds.

Despite the monsoon season typically concluding by mid-September, this year's rains have persisted. In response to the weather conditions, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that all schools and colleges in its jurisdiction would resume normal operations after being closed the previous day. The BMC reassured residents via social media that life in Mumbai was returning to normal and urged parents to rely on official information.

While schools in Mumbai will reopen, local authorities in Raigad district have decided to close educational institutions due to the heavy rainfall warning.

Wednesday’s heavy downpour caused significant disruptions in Mumbai, leading to the cancellation of 11 flights and the diversion of 10 others due to low visibility at the airport. Runway operations were halted twice, with visibility dropping to as low as 300 meters. Airlines like IndiGo and Air India were notably affected, prompting passengers to check flight statuses and arrive early due to anticipated water-logging and traffic congestion.

In light of the weather conditions, Akasa Airlines also advised travelers to leave for the airport well in advance, warning that heavy rains could lead to slow traffic movement. As the city navigates these weather challenges, residents are encouraged to stay updated and exercise caution while traveling.
